Announcement
Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ:LUNR) reported that it has been awarded a firm‑fixed‑price contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) valued at up to $148.3 million. The contract, which requires delivery of a production‑line‑qualified Nova‑C lunar lander no later than 2028, represents the company’s sixth award under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.
Financial Terms
The agreement comprises a base contract amount of $68.6 million for mission execution and a performance‑incentive component of $79.7 million that will be paid upon successful demonstration of product‑line qualification.
Payload and Mission Scope
Under the award Intuitive Machines will transport scientific and operational payloads to the lunar surface, including advanced stereo cameras to study surface‑plume interactions, a laser retro‑reflector array for precise cislunar positioning, and a Linear Energy Transfer Spectrometer radiation monitor to collect environmental safety data.
Manufacturing Strategy
CEO Steve Altemus stated that the company is scaling its manufacturing processes to enable high‑volume production of Nova‑C landers, shifting from a custom aerospace‑engineering model to commercial mass production of lunar infrastructure. He noted that the flight‑proven Nova‑C platform allows the firm to build, test and deploy multiple landers in parallel.
Strategic Significance
The contract aligns with NASA’s accelerated schedule for lunar surface deliveries and supports the broader Artemis program’s goal of establishing operational Moon Base sites.
Market Reaction
Following the announcement, Intuitive Machines’ shares rose 6 % in after‑hours trading on Tuesday.
