Iren Accelerates Power Grid Investment in Turin
Iren, the Italian regional utility, issued a statement on 26 June 2026 indicating that it will accelerate its investment programme for power infrastructure in response to recent heat‑wave conditions that disrupted services and placed strain on the electricity grid in Turin. The utility highlighted that electricity consumption in Turin surged by 30 percent over the past few weeks as high temperatures drove up demand, stressing a network that is overseen by an Iren subsidiary responsible for local power distribution.
The company disclosed that it will allocate €515 million (approximately US$586.69 million) to upgrade Turin’s electricity grid through the year 2030. The earmarked capital will be directed toward strengthening medium‑voltage power lines, enhancing the network’s resilience to extreme weather events, and developing a more efficient fault‑management system to reduce outage durations.
In a separate press release, labour unions voiced criticism of what they described as a chronic staff shortage at Iren and a perceived lack of sufficient investment in the utility’s operations, underscoring ongoing workforce concerns.
