Transaction Overview
Jain Irrigation Systems Limited has entered into an agreement with Supercritical, a carbon removal marketplace, for the sale of biochar carbon removal credits. The agreement covers up to 19,000 tonnes of durable carbon removal credits generated from the company's operations during the years 2026 and 2027.
Facility and Production Details
The biochar production occurs at Jain's industrial biochar facility located in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, which has been operational since early 2026. The facility utilizes a gasification process to convert agricultural and food processing residues into biochar, creating a stable carbon form that remains locked in soil for centuries. All outputs from the process are utilized within Jain's own operations: syngas replaces fossil fuels at industrial facilities, and the biochar is used in Jain's downstream agriculture businesses and distributed to farmers as a soil amendment.
Verification and Quality Assurance
The project is currently undergoing verification through Puro.earth, with an independent BeZero Carbon rating also in progress to ensure quality and credibility of the carbon removal credits.
Strategic Context and Company Capabilities
Jain Irrigation brings significant agricultural expertise to this initiative, having worked with farmers since 1963 and served more than 10 million farmers. The company operates one of the world's largest mango processing operations and tissue culture nurseries, producing 150 million plants annually. With 60 years of established supply chains, existing feedstock from company operations, and a pre-existing farmer network, Jain possesses unique advantages in biochar production scalability.
Market Context
According to Supercritical's H2 2026 biochar market report, 81% of high-quality 2026 biochar supply was already committed by July 2026, three months earlier than at the same point in 2025. This indicates a tightening market where corporate buyers are shifting from one-off spot purchases to multi-year contracts.
Management Commentary
Steve Morrin, Supply Senior Manager at Supercritical, emphasized Jain's operational advantages: "Most biochar projects we evaluate are building their supply chains from scratch. Jain has had theirs for 60 years. The facility is running, the feedstock comes from their own operations, and the farmer network already exists."
Ajit Jain, Joint Managing Director of Jain Irrigation Systems Limited, stated: "Our reach across millions of farmers and our scale in irrigation and tissue culture give us a strong foundation for developing biochar at scale. Biochar creates value from agricultural residues and connects our work in water management, planting material, manufacturing, and food processing with durable carbon removal. Our partnership with Supercritical helps us scale biochar deployment."
