HeartSafe Initiative Launch
Kauvery Hospital and Chennai International Airport jointly inaugurated the HeartSafe Initiative, installing 13 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at strategic locations throughout the airport. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Raja Kishore, Director of Chennai International Airport, and Dr. Manivannan Selvaraj, Founder and Managing Director of the Kauvery Group of Hospitals, along with senior officials from both organisations.
24x7 Airport Emergency Medical Services
Kauvery Hospital provides round‑the‑clock emergency medical services at the airport via four clinics situated at T1 Arrival, T2 Departure, T2 Security Hold Area (SHA), and T4 Arrival. A dedicated team of 49 healthcare professionals—including emergency physicians, nurses, paramedics and support staff—delivers prompt medical assessment, stabilisation, and emergency care to passengers, airport personnel, airline crew and visitors. The service is further supported by two fully equipped ambulances, one positioned airside and the other cityside, to ensure rapid patient transfer when required.
Patient Volume and Cardiac Cases
Each clinic handles roughly 80‑100 patients per month, resulting in an estimated 320‑400 patients across all four clinics monthly. These patients comprise medical emergencies, in‑flight emergencies, walk‑in consultations, and individuals needing stabilisation and transfer to higher‑level care facilities. On average, 5‑10 patients per month present with cardiac‑related conditions—most commonly chest pain, palpitations and high blood pressure—highlighting the critical need for swift cardiac response capabilities within the airport environment.
Role of AEDs in Emergency Response
The newly installed AEDs are portable devices that analyse heart rhythm and, when necessary, deliver a controlled electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat. Their presence ensures that life‑saving intervention can be administered within the first few minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest, a period crucial for survival.

Mr. Raja Kishore emphasized the airport’s commitment to safety, stating that the AED installation is an important step in strengthening emergency medical preparedness and that the partnership with Kauvery Hospital enhances the airport’s ability to respond swiftly during medical emergencies. Dr. Manivannan Selvaraj highlighted that every minute without treatment reduces survival chances in cardiac arrest, and that immediate CPR combined with AED use markedly improves outcomes. He noted that while AEDs are vital, comprehensive emergency preparedness also requires trained personnel, proper training, and robust systems.
