Overview
Kauvery Hospital Radial Road in Chennai treated a 32‑year‑old woman who suffered a cardiac arrest while recovering from a minor procedure. After resuscitation she remained unconscious, and investigations revealed severely compromised cardiac function caused by a critical brain haemorrhage due to complex cerebral vascular abnormalities.
Clinical Investigation and Diagnosis
A CT angiogram performed by the hospital’s neuroscience team identified a ruptured brain aneurysm and an obstructed prominent venous channel, explaining both the haemorrhage and the cardiac arrest.
Emergency Surgical Intervention
The emergency neurosurgery was led by Dr Krish Sridhar, Group Mentor, Neurosciences & Director, Institute of Brain & Spine, Kauvery Hospital Radial Road. The operation, conducted under advanced cardiac output monitoring, secured the ruptured aneurysm and included a rarely performed surgical mechanical thrombectomy to restore flow in the obstructed venous channel. Close coordination between the neurosurgery and neuroanaesthesia teams, together with continuous haemodynamic monitoring, was essential given the patient’s severely compromised cardiac function.
Post‑operative Neurocritical Care
Following surgery, the patient was transferred to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit, where Dr Ponniah Vanamoorthy, Head and Senior Consultant, Neuroanesthesiology & Neurocritical Care, oversaw advanced critical‑care monitoring. The patient showed progressive improvement in both neurological status and cardiac function. Two months after the event she regained near‑normal daily functioning, can perform routine activities independently, and is preparing to resume her active lifestyle.
Executive Commentary
Dr Krish Sridhar emphasized that early recognition of stroke and rapid, coordinated multidisciplinary intervention were pivotal to the successful outcome, noting that neurological emergencies can present with cardiac arrest and must be identified promptly. Dr Ponniah Vanamoorthy highlighted the clinical challenges of operating on a patient with poor cardiac function and the importance of specialised neuro‑anaesthesia and monitoring. Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Co‑founder and Executive Director of the Kauvery Group of Hospitals, underscored the hospital’s multidisciplinary approach, advanced monitoring, and dedicated neuro‑critical care as core to its commitment to high‑quality, timely treatment of complex emergencies.
