Partnership Overview

On Monday, 2 November 2026, Kenswitch, the domestic payment switch regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya, announced a partnership with Wibmo, a PayU company, to strengthen authentication for online card payments in Kenya. The collaboration integrates Wibmo’s payment‑authentication suite, which leverages EMV 3‑D Secure technology, into Kenswitch’s shared infrastructure that connects banks, SACCOs, micro‑finance institutions and mobile‑money providers.

Technology and Services

Participating issuers will gain access to an Access Control Server (ACS) that enables real‑time transaction‑risk assessment and supports multiple verification methods, including one‑time passwords, biometrics and push‑based approvals. The ACS determines whether a purchase can proceed automatically or requires the cardholder to authenticate the transaction. Eligible cards already issued by banks, SACCOs and micro‑finance institutions may be used for e‑commerce transactions routed through Kenswitch, provided they comply with applicable payment‑network rules, commercial agreements, technical integration requirements and regulatory thresholds.

Network Reach

Kenswitch’s network comprises more than 2,500 ATMs, over 50,000 point‑of‑sale terminals and upwards of 80,000 agents, in addition to e‑commerce and digital payment channels, enabling secure routing of both local and international merchant transactions.

Statements from Leadership

John Mukono, Chief Executive Officer of Kenswitch, stated that the partnership positions Kenswitch to deliver international‑standard authentication solutions to its connected banks, enhancing cardholder protection while maintaining seamless digital payment experiences. Shailesh Paul, Chief Executive Officer of Wibmo, expressed delight in enabling secure digital commerce in Kenya through the Wibmo Payment Authentication suite, emphasizing the commitment to scalable and trusted payment journeys.
