Launch Overview

The Korfball Premier League (KPL) was officially launched in New Delhi as India’s first professional mixed‑gender sports tournament. The inaugural season will run through 4 October 2026.

Competition Format

The league will operate on a single‑table round‑robin format, with the top four teams progressing to knockout playoffs and the final scheduled for 4 October.

Participants

Eight regional franchises will compete, fielding a balanced roster of four men and four women per team. The player pool includes domestic talent and international athletes drawn from 20 different countries.

Broadcast and Media

All matches will be televised nationally on Star Sports and streamed live on the Jio Hotstar platform, providing nationwide coverage.

Government and Stakeholder Comments

Union Minister Kiran Rijiju attended the launch, stating that India’s sporting framework needs competitive, organized leagues beyond traditional disciplines and that the gender‑parity model offers an objective template for team‑sport governance. Amandeep Singh, Co‑Founder of KPL, described korfball as uniquely positioned to revolutionise sports entertainment in India by breaking conventional barriers. Zaara Gadhok, Co‑Founder, said the league’s objective is to test whether an equitable team format can build a commercially viable audience in India. Gagandeep Handa, Founder of Sporty Bharat and KPL, emphasized the aim to create a long‑term commercial platform that sets a new benchmark for gender‑equal competitive sports.

Organiser

Sporty Bharat, an Indian sports‑management company, is responsible for administering, producing, and commercialising the KPL, focusing on infrastructure development, athlete management, and multi‑channel broadcast rights.
