Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla paid floral tributes to Dr. G.S. Dhillon, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, on his birth anniversary in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on August 6, 2026. The ceremony was attended by Deputy-Chairman of Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh, Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament, Secretary-General of Lok Sabha Shri Utpal Kumar Singh, and other dignitaries who also paid their respects.
Dr. Gurdial Singh Dhillon was a distinguished parliamentarian, freedom fighter, and journalist born in Amritsar on August 6, 1915. He actively participated in India's freedom struggle and the Kisan Movement before transitioning to journalism after Independence. As Chief Editor of the Urdu daily Sher-e-Bharat and Managing Director of National Sikh Newspapers Ltd., he championed communal harmony and social unity. Elected to the Fourth Lok Sabha from Taran Taran in 1967, he was unanimously elected Speaker of the Fourth Lok Sabha on August 8, 1969, and re-elected as Speaker of the Fifth Lok Sabha on March 22, 1971, serving with distinction until December 1, 1975.
