MAHE Launches Charitable Housing Initiative
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence deemed university, announced a social‑welfare programme aimed at constructing and donating fifty affordable homes for economically disadvantaged families of students attending government Kannada‑medium schools in Udupi district. The initiative, launched on 17 September 2026, coincides with the 91st birthday of Chancellor Dr Ramdas M. Pai, Padma Bhushan awardee, and was unveiled by Dr Ranjan R. Pai, President of the MAHE Trust, alongside a beneficiary family.
MAHE has partnered with Yakshagana Kalaranga to execute the project over the next five years. Eligible families will be identified using defined criteria that give priority to economically weaker families of deserving students. MAHE will supervise the construction process and will hand over completed houses to the selected beneficiaries at no cost, ensuring no financial burden falls on the families. At the launch event, construction confirmation letters were handed to two families, marking the first tangible step of the programme.
In remarks, Dr H S Ballal, Pro‑Chancellor of MAHE, emphasized that while education transforms lives, addressing basic needs such as safe, permanent housing is essential for dignified living and broader social development. The initiative underscores MAHE’s commitment to extending its charitable activities beyond education into broader community welfare.
MAHE, which offers over 400 specialisations across Health Sciences, Management, Law, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Technology & Science at campuses in Manipal, Mangalore, Bengaluru, Jamshedpur, and Dubai, received Institution of Eminence status from the Ministry of Education in 2020 and is currently ranked third in the NIRF 2025 rankings.
