Overview

On 19 August 2026, a 60‑year‑old male patient from Kolkata presenting with uncontrolled hypertension (220/120 mmHg) and hypertensive urgency was admitted to Manipal Hospital Dhakuria. The patient exhibited severe headache, chest discomfort, vomiting, blurred vision, vertigo and semi‑consciousness. Routine coronary angiography identified coronary artery disease, prompting renal angiography to explore secondary causes of hypertension. Renal angiography revealed a 100 % thrombotic occlusion of the left renal artery, rendering conventional balloon angioplasty infeasible.

Intervention

Interventional Cardiologist Dr Soumya Kanti Dutta elected to perform a laser‑guided renal artery angioplasty. The laser technology successfully dissolved the thrombotic clot, allowing placement of a stent at the ostium of the left renal artery. Restoration of normal blood flow to the left kidney was achieved, leading to improved renal function, resumption of normal urination, and stabilization of the patient’s blood pressure.

Outcome

The patient was reported to be stable and doing well following the procedure. Dr Dutta described the approach as a major advancement in interventional cardiology and nephrology, noting that laser‑guided angioplasty may reduce the likelihood of repeat occlusion, shorten recovery time and lessen procedural pain.
