Manipal Hospitals EM Bypass performed an emergency Balloon Mitral Valvotomy on a 26‑year‑old woman (Rojee Kumari) at 24 weeks gestation carrying diamniotic twins, who presented in NYHA Class IV heart failure due to severe rheumatic mitral stenosis and pulmonary hypertension.
The procedure, led by Dr Dilip Kumar (Director, Cath Lab, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Device and Structural Heart Expert), involved two balloon dilations; the second dilation achieved adequate valve opening, immediately reducing intracardiac pressure and stabilising the mother.
Post‑procedure, the patient recovered without fetal distress, was discharged in stable condition, and on 12 May 2026 delivered a premature boy and girl who are reported healthy; the hospital provided financial concessions to the family.
This case follows a similar high‑risk twin‑pregnancy BMV performed in 2023, together constituting the first reported series of such interventions in India and globally, highlighting advanced minimally invasive cardiac care capabilities.
Manipal Hospitals operates a pan‑India network of 49 hospitals across 24 cities, serving over 8 million patients annually, with 12,600 licensed beds, 11,000+ doctors and 34,000 staff, and holds AAHRPP, NABH, NABL accreditations.
