Manipal Hospitals EM Bypass performed an emergency Balloon Mitral Valvotomy on a 26‑year‑old woman (Rojee Kumari) at 24 weeks of a diamniotic twin pregnancy, stabilising her severe rheumatic mitral stenosis and pulmonary hypertension.
The procedure, carried out on 26 April 2026 after admission on 24 April, involved two balloon dilations with radiation protection, resulting in immediate pressure reduction and symptomatic relief; the patient was discharged in stable condition.
Post‑procedure monitoring showed no fetal distress; the pregnancy continued, and on 12 May 2026 the patient delivered a premature but healthy boy and girl in Bhagalpur.
This case, together with a similar high‑risk twin‑pregnancy intervention performed in 2023, constitutes the first reported series of such procedures in India and globally, highlighting advanced interventional cardiology capabilities.
Manipal Hospitals operates a network of 49 hospitals across 24 cities, with 12,600 licensed beds, over 11,000 doctors and more than 34,000 staff, underscoring its extensive healthcare presence in India.
