Green Hydrogen Plant Commissioning

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commissioned a 300 kW Green Hydrogen (GH₂) electrolyzer plant as a pilot project at its Manesar facility in Haryana. The green hydrogen produced is blended with natural gas and utilized as process fuel in the company's manufacturing operations.

The plant maximizes utilization of solar energy generated at the Manesar facility, particularly using solar energy produced during holidays that would otherwise remain unutilized. The hydrogen is stored and subsequently used in manufacturing operations. Based on learnings from this pilot project, the company plans to scale up green hydrogen technology adoption across its manufacturing facilities in Haryana and Gujarat.

Carbon Reduction Targets and Strategy

Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, stated that the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint in manufacturing operations from the present 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes in FY 2030-31. This initiative is aligned with the Government of India's Green Hydrogen Mission and represents part of the company's multi-pathway approach to renewable energy solutions for manufacturing operations.

Additional Clean Energy Initiatives

Maruti Suzuki is implementing multiple clean energy solutions including:

  • In-house solar power plants
  • Renewable energy procurement from government sources
  • Power purchase agreements with third-party providers for solar and wind-based energy
  • A 10 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility (to be commissioned within FY 2026-27)
  • A 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System already commissioned at Kharkhoda facility
  • Integration of compressed biogas (CBG) as process fuel

The company's board has approved 4 CBG projects with a budget of INR 5,610 million. Separately, Suzuki Motor Corporation in partnership with National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and dairy industry unions will set up 10 biogas plants across India, with three already operational in Gujarat.
