Product Launch Details

Maruti Suzuki India Limited launched India's first flex-fuel car on June 4, 2026, in New Delhi. The launch event was attended by Hon'ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari and Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Hardeep Singh Puri.

Product Specifications

The flex-fuel car is based on the Wagon R model, which has previously pioneered alternate fuel vehicles in India including CNG and LPG. The vehicle features:

  • Advanced ECU calibration capable of seamlessly adapting to any ethanol blend between E20 to E100
  • Specifically engineered for ethanol-blended fuel compatibility
  • Homologated with E85 fuel as per Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 (CMVR) GSR 27(E)
  • Compatible with E100 fuel as defined in IS17821:2022

The product received JATO Dynamics certification dated 29th May, 2026.

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri noted that India's ethanol journey is unstoppable and described flex-fuel vehicles as a "win-win for the nation" that transforms farmers from 'annadatas' to 'urjadatas' while strengthening energy security.

Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, stated that Maruti Suzuki is committed to offering cars with multiple technologies and fuels including BEVs, Hybrids, CNG/CBG and ethanol flex-fuel vehicles. He acknowledged the ethanol ecosystem is in early stages and as market leader, the company feels responsibility to contribute to making 'India Go Flex'.

Market Context

The launch was timed on the eve of World Environment Day and supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). The Wagon R brand was specifically chosen as it has a history of pioneering alternate fuel vehicles in the Indian market.
