Marvel Studios Announces New Film Slate at San Diego Comic‑Con
Walt Disney’s Marvel Studios used its San Diego Comic‑Con appearance on 26 July 2026 to unveil two major upcoming titles. The first, “Ghost Rider,” will star Ryan Gosling and is directed by Shawn Levy, who previously helmed the successful “Deadpool and Wolverine.” Marvel disclosed that the film is scheduled for a 2028 theatrical release, though no specific release date was provided.
The second announcement was “Black Panther 3,” slated to hit cinemas on 15 December 2028. The sequel introduces David Jonsson as the new T’Challa, the son of the original Black Panther portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman (who passed away in 2020). Director Ryan Coogler presented the film alongside returning cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. Marvel noted that the first two “Black Panther” movies together generated more than $2 billion at the global box office.
In addition to the two new titles, Marvel showcased footage from “Avengers: Doomsday,” featuring Doctor Doom (to be played by Robert Downey Jr.) defeating members of the Avengers and commanding an army of Sentinels, the mutant‑hunting robots from X‑Men comics. Hayley Atwell confirmed her return as Peggy Carter. The panel also highlighted “Avengers: Secret Wars,” scheduled for December 2027, and confirmed that “Avengers: Doomsday” will be released on 18 December 2028, positioning it against Warner Bros. Discovery’s third “Dune” film in a high‑profile box‑office clash.
The Comic‑Con session featured a star‑studded lineup, including directors Anthony and Joe Russo, and actors Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Simu Liu, James Marsden, and David Harbour. Surprise appearances were made by Ryan Reynolds and Jon Bernthal.
Marvel highlighted that its film franchise has generated nearly $33 billion worldwide, cementing the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the highest‑grossing movie franchise in history, while “Avengers: Endgame” remains the second‑largest box‑office film of all time.
Walt Disney announced that further updates on these projects will be provided at its D23 convention in Anaheim, California, from 14 to 16 August 2026.
