Press Release: A New Sentinel for the Seas: INS Mahendragiri Commissioned into the Indian Navy
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) announced the formal commissioning of INS Mahendragiri, an advanced stealth frigate, into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026. The commissioning ceremony was attended by Hon'ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
Ship Specifications and Capabilities
INS Mahendragiri is the fourth ship of the Nilgiri class stealth frigates built under Project 17A. Key specifications include:
- Length: 149 metres
- Breadth: 17.8 metres
- Displacement: Approximately 6,400 tonnes
- Propulsion: Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) system with two Gas Turbines and two Main Diesel Engines
- Maximum speed: Exceeding 28 knots at design displacement
The frigate incorporates state-of-the-art stealth technology, advanced weapon systems, modern sensors, and highly automated systems for enhanced combat effectiveness and operational efficiency.
Indigenous Design and Construction
The basic design was developed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau (WDB), while detailed design and construction were undertaken by MDL, Mumbai. Construction was supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai). The ship features approximately 75% indigenous content, supporting the Government of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and Make in India initiatives.
Construction Efficiency and Delivery Timeline
MDL achieved significant improvements in construction efficiency:
- 21% reduction in build period compared to the First-of-Class vessel
- Completed Sea Trials and Final Machinery Trials within just two months of Basin Trials
- Delivered five warships and one submarine to the Indian Navy within 16 months
Key combat systems including SRGM, AK-630, BrahMos, Kavach, IRL and their associated magazines achieved full operational readiness prior to delivery through coordinated efforts of MDL, Indian Navy, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
Strategic Impact
The induction of INS Mahendragiri will augment the Indian Navy's surveillance capabilities, operational reach, and maritime security posture across the Indian Ocean Region. The project showcases collaboration between Indian Navy, MDL, and a network of Indian industries including MSMEs, strengthening the domestic defence industrial ecosystem while promoting innovation, skill development, and employment generation.
