Investment Overview
McLaren Automotive announced a £500 million investment to expand its manufacturing, engineering and operational footprint in the United Kingdom. The funding is provided by L’IMAD, the sovereign investor of the Government of Abu Dhabi and a shareholder of McLaren, which has been working with the company’s management for the past 20 months to sharpen its growth strategy.
Production Expansion and New Model
The capital will be used to build a new vehicle assembly facility in the UK where McLaren’s next‑generation cars, including a newly confirmed performance SUV, will be produced. In addition, McLaren will bring future power‑train development and production in‑house for the first time, initially introducing two new engines and transmissions as part of its hybrid strategy that began with the McLaren P1.
Facility Enhancements
The programme will increase activity at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking and the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire, which handles carbon‑fibre manufacturing and research. McLaren has also recently opened a design and innovation centre at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester and a testing and vehicle development facility in the Midlands.
Job Creation and Workforce Impact
McLaren expects the investment to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs across its UK operations by 2032 while protecting existing positions. The UK manufacturing workforce is projected to double, supported by new apprenticeships, and up to 3,000 additional jobs could be generated across the supply chain.
Executive Statements
Jassem Al Zaabi, Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of L’IMAD, said the investment reflects confidence in McLaren’s potential and a commitment to backing the business through its next chapter, building on the heritage, engineering excellence and distinctive brand that have defined McLaren for more than six decades.
Nick Collins, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Group Holdings and McLaren Automotive, said the investment provides a platform to grow, develop and build on what makes the company distinctive, while investing in people, technology and products to stay competitive for decades.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham remarked that McLaren Automotive is “doubling down on Britain, keeping the design, the engineering and the building of every future car here, and taking on a thousand more people to do it.”
