Meta Platforms AI Agent Development Lags Behind Expectations
Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed employees in an internal town‑hall recording, stating that the development of artificial‑intelligence agents over the past four months “has not accelerated in the way we expected.” He noted that this slower‑than‑anticipated progress has led the company to reassess its recent restructuring efforts, which were undertaken to accelerate AI capabilities.
Zuckerberg highlighted that Meta had been concerned earlier in the year about not moving quickly enough to match rapid advances in the AI field, citing optimism around tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code that have yet to materialise into tangible outcomes. Despite the lag, Meta remains committed to its AI investment plan, projecting up to $145 billion in spending on AI infrastructure for the current year. He added that the company still expects to see “more meaningful returns” from these investments within the next three to six months.
In a related comment, Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth reported that a review of a previously paused employee activity‑tracking program confirmed that no employee data had been used for AI training purposes. This clarification was provided to address internal concerns about data usage in the company’s AI initiatives.
