Overview

Micro Labs Limited, a Bengaluru‑headquartered privately held pharmaceutical company, commemorated 53 years of operation on 27 October 2026. The firm now serves more than 50 countries, runs 17 manufacturing units, employs approximately 15,000 people and offers a portfolio exceeding 400 products, positioning it among India’s top‑20 pharma players.

Historical Background

The company was founded in 1973 in Chennai by Shri G. C. Surana, an accountant from Rajasthan who used personal savings and family support to launch a venture with five products and a modest manufacturing setup. The second generation, led by Chairman and Managing Director Dr Dilip Surana, joined in the early 1980s and expanded the business to a pan‑India footprint. His brother, Mr Anand Surana, later took charge of exports, initially targeting markets such as Sri Lanka and Nigeria before broadening the international presence.

Product Portfolio and Innovation

Micro Labs emphasizes quality‑driven product development, covering the full value chain from API selection to formulation, testing and regulatory submission. Its R&D centres in Bengaluru and Mumbai house more than 400 scientists working on specialised drug‑delivery platforms, including sustained‑release formulations, orally dispersible tablets, mini‑tablets and osmotic‑controlled release systems. Notable products include TRISOPT, a triple‑drug fixed‑dose combination for glaucoma, and Dolo, a 650 mg paracetamol tablet launched in 1993 that gained widespread recognition during the Covid‑19 pandemic and now contributes roughly 15 % of the company’s turnover. Building on its prescription‑medicine legacy, the firm is entering the over‑the‑counter wellness segment under the “Micro Wellness” banner.

Workforce and Culture

The company attributes its growth to a low‑attrition workforce, with many employees staying 10‑15 years in specific functions, reflecting a blend of experienced professionals and younger talent. Ms Diya Surana, Head – Strategy and Digital Transformation, highlighted the intent to leverage the trust earned through Dolo to expand into everyday wellness solutions.

Manufacturing Modernisation and Capital Expenditure

Micro Labs operates 17 manufacturing units and earmarks an annual capital expenditure of approximately Rs 500 – Rs 700 crore for facility upgrades, expansion, and the adoption of advanced machinery, automation and robotics. At its Sikkim plant, certain production lines are capable of operating without manual intervention, showcasing the push toward higher efficiency and precision.

Anti‑Counterfeit Measures and Sustainability

The company has rolled out counterfeit‑proof labeling across 100 product lines, enabling chemists and consumers to verify product authenticity, with plans to extend the programme further. Additionally, the Dolo brand has achieved plastic‑neutral status, reflecting Micro Labs’ commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging.

International Expansion Strategy

Micro Labs continues to strengthen its global footprint by focusing on both regulated and emerging markets, leveraging local relationships and partnerships. Mr Anand Surana noted that consistency is rewarded across market types and that the firm will keep building local presence. Dr Dilip Surana added that over the next decade the company aims to be globally recognised for quality, innovation and access while staying true to its founding values.
