Overview
Micro Labs Limited, a Bengaluru‑headquartered privately held pharmaceutical company, commemorated 53 years of operations on 27 Oct 2026. The firm now serves more than 50 countries, runs 17 manufacturing units, employs roughly 15,000 people and offers a portfolio exceeding 400 products.
History and Leadership
Founded in 1973 in Chennai by Shri G. C. Surana, the company started with five products and a modest manufacturing set‑up. The second generation, led by Chairman and Managing Director Dr Dilip Surana, expanded the business pan‑India, while his brother Anand Surana, Director, drove export growth from early markets such as Sri Lanka and Nigeria to a broader international footprint. Diya Surana, Head – Strategy and Digital Transformation, is now steering the brand’s move into consumer wellness.
Product Portfolio and R&D
Micro Labs’ R&D centres in Bengaluru and Mumbai house over 400 scientists working on formulation development, analytical validation, stability studies and regulatory submissions. The company’s capabilities include sustained‑release, orally dispersible tablets, mini‑tablets and osmotic‑controlled release systems. Notable products include TRISOPT, a triple‑drug fixed‑dose combination for glaucoma, and Dolo, a 650 mg paracetamol launched in 1993 that gained mass recognition during the Covid‑19 pandemic. Despite its visibility, Dolo contributes only about 15 % of the company’s turnover, underscoring the diversified nature of the business. The firm is now extending its reach into the over‑the‑counter (OTC) wellness segment under the “Micro Wellness” banner.
Manufacturing Modernisation and Capital Expenditure
The company operates 17 manufacturing facilities and earmarks roughly Rs 500 crore to Rs 700 crore each year for capital expenditure, primarily for facility upgrades, automation and robotics. At the Sikkim plant, certain production lines function without manual intervention, reflecting a push toward higher efficiency and precision.
Anti‑counterfeit and Sustainability Initiatives
Micro Labs has rolled out counterfeit‑proof labelling on 100 product lines, enabling chemists and consumers to verify authenticity. The programme is being expanded to additional lines. In sustainability efforts, the Dolo brand has become one of the first Indian brands to achieve plastic‑neutral status, addressing packaging‑related environmental impact.
International Presence and Future Outlook
With a presence in more than 50 countries, the company continues to strengthen its global business by building local relationships and partnerships in both regulated and emerging markets. Anand Surana emphasized that consistency is rewarded across market types. Dr Dilip Surana stated that over the next decade Micro Labs aims to be globally recognised for quality, innovation and access while staying true to the founding values.
