Operational Expansion
Milky Mist Dairy Food Limited has commissioned a new 10 MW solar power plant at Arasanoor, in addition to the existing 15 MW solar power plant at the same location. This brings the total solar capacity at Arasanoor to 25 MW with a total investment of approximately ₹109.60 crore.
Renewable Energy Capacity
The company's total renewable energy generation capacity now stands at approximately 41 MW across multiple locations:
- 5 MW at Chithode
- 9 MW at Kavilipalayam
- 25 MW at Arasanoor
- 2 MW of wind power at Kayathar
With this new capacity, the company has achieved 100% energy self-sufficiency through renewable sources, meeting its total power requirements.
Energy Generation and Environmental Impact
The 25 MW Arasanoor facility is expected to generate approximately 2.0 million units of renewable electricity annually. This will support the energy requirements of the company's integrated manufacturing facility at Perundurai and its milk chilling centers across multiple locations.
The additional renewable capacity is expected to help avoid approximately 16,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Historical Investment and Performance
Since commissioning its first solar plant in 2016, Milky Mist has invested a total of ₹197 crore for 41 MW in renewable energy generation plants. The company has cumulatively generated approximately 210 million units of power, equivalent to a value of around ₹165 crore.
The solar plants are designed for a minimum operating life of approximately 28-30 years, with the installed capacity expected to generate around 1,400 million units of electricity over its lifecycle, equivalent to an estimated reduction of approximately 1.35 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Additional Sustainability Initiatives
The company has also invested in:
- Steam turbine technology
- Methane gas purification plant generating approximately 15,000 units of electricity daily
- Effluent treatment operations for captive power generation (methane purification into CNG)
- Biomass for boiler operations
Management Commentary
Mr. T Sathish Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director, stated that the commissioning represents another significant step in the company's sustainability journey, taking renewable sources to over 100% of total power requirements. The approach emphasizes embedding sustainability in business operations rather than treating it as a standalone initiative.
