Mumbai Port Authority Infrastructure Strengthening and Green Initiatives
The Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has undertaken significant infrastructure development projects totaling approximately ₹1.28 billion over the past two years (2024-26), as disclosed by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Infrastructure Projects (2025-26)
The port authority is executing four major projects in the current period: Development, Operation and Maintenance of Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Indira Dock on DBFOT PPP basis costing ₹192 crore; Modernization of existing Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Indira Dock on EPC mode costing ₹303 crore; Shore Protection at Jawahar Dweep costing ₹80.4 crore; and Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina (EPC part) costing ₹470 crore.
Infrastructure Projects (2024-25)
In the previous year, MbPA completed three projects: Construction of Third Chemical Berth at Pirpau costing ₹161 crore; SCADA and PLC automation system at Marine Oil Terminal costing ₹25.84 crore; and Augmentation of Firefighting facilities at Pir Pau Terminal costing ₹52.69 crore.
Green Port Initiatives
MbPA has implemented comprehensive green initiatives including renewable energy deployment with 1.4 MW operational rooftop solar capacity and a 3 MW rooftop solar project under implementation on Indira Dock sheds under RESCO model. Currently, 57% of the port's electricity requirement is met through renewable energy. The port is piloting biofuel blending in collaboration with BPCL and inducting Green Tugs under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). Development of an LNG import and handling facility at Jawahar Dweep is underway to facilitate cleaner marine fuel handling. Ecological initiatives include bamboo plantation drives and development of a Mangrove Park at Sewri to enhance green cover and support coastal ecosystem. The port is also converting from LPG to PNG across residential and common-user connections.
