Nippon Paint offers $8.6bn for Akzo Nobel’s decorative paints unit

Nippon Paint has submitted a proposal valued at up to €7.5 billion, equivalent to approximately $8.6 billion, to acquire the decorative paints business of Akzo Nobel. The offer targets the segment that houses global brands such as Dulux, and is intended to significantly broaden Nippon Paint’s international presence.

Earlier in the past year, Akzo Nobel turned down joint acquisition attempts by Nippon Paint together with Sherwin‑Williams. Instead, the Dutch company chose to pursue a merger with Axalta Coating Systems, indicating a strategic preference for that partnership over the foreign bids.

The Bloomberg report, cited by Reuters, confirms that the current offer is part of Nippon Paint’s ongoing effort to expand its footprint in the global paints market.
