NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, is transforming from a legacy mining company into an integrated energy powerhouse to support India's development and climate goals. The company currently operates 8,405 MW of power generation capacity and 59.10 MTPA mining capacity, and is undertaking significant expansion to ensure energy security while supporting decarbonization objectives.
Energy Security and Thermal Power Expansion
NLCIL is substantially scaling its mining capacity from the current 59.1 MTPA to 104.35 MTPA by 2030, with a further target of 115.85 MTPA by 2047 to eliminate import dependence. The company is transitioning to cleaner thermal power through high-efficiency, low-emission (HELE) generation projects including 1,980 MW supercritical units at Ghatampur, 2,400 MW ultra-supercritical pit-head thermal power at Talabira, and 4,000 MW at Machhakatta. To improve logistical efficiency, NLCIL is commissioning 63.5 MTPA capacity across First Mile Connectivity (FMC) rail corridors at Pachwara South, North Dhadu (west), Talabira, Machhakatta and New Patrapara (South) to eliminate road transport emissions and reduce oil dependency.
Renewable Energy Development
Through its dedicated green arm NLCIL Renewables Limited (NIRL), the company is expanding its operational renewable portfolio from approximately 1.8 GW to over 10 GW by 2030, with a target of 32.7 GW by 2047. This would establish a 50% clean energy mix in its generation portfolio well ahead of schedule. The company is developing multiple battery energy storage systems including 250 MW / 500 MWh in Tamil Nadu, 300 MW / 1,800 MWh with SECI in Rajasthan, 275 MW / 550 MWh with GUVNL in Gujarat, and 50 MW / 200 MWh with WBSEDL. NLCIL is also targeting large-scale pumped storage projects in Tamil Nadu and Odisha to balance renewable grid intermittency.
Diversification and Strategic Initiatives
NLCIL is pursuing several diversification projects to achieve low-carbon industrialization and strategic mineral autonomy. The company is constructing a pilot 4 MW solar-powered PEM electrolyzer Green Hydrogen plant at Neyveli and partnering with IIT Madras on advanced Carbon Capture Systems. For critical mineral security, NLCIL has secured domestic composite exploration licenses for phosphorite and limestone in Chhattisgarh, and vanadium and titanium in Telangana. The company is also pursuing international prospects through KABIL for critical minerals, aligning with national self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) objectives.
