NMDC Strategic Review at Donimalai Mining Complex
NMDC's senior management conducted a comprehensive review of strategic initiatives at the Donimalai Complex in Karnataka, focusing on strengthening operational efficiency, promoting responsible mining practices, and improving quality of life for employees and surrounding communities. The visit assessed progress on key projects aimed at transforming Donimalai into a future-ready mining complex while reinforcing NMDC's position as India's largest and responsible iron ore producer.
Production Capacity Expansion Targets
The management reviewed ongoing capacity expansion and infrastructure development initiatives with specific production targets: 10 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum) from the Kumaraswamy Mine and 17 MTPA from the Donimalai Complex. These production enhancements form a key part of NMDC's broader vision of becoming a 100 MTPA mining company.
Sustainable Mining and Resource Utilization
A significant focus was on initiatives for utilizing iron ore containing up to 35% Fe, iron ore slimes, and low-grade iron-bearing materials such as Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) and Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ). These resources, which were traditionally treated as waste despite containing valuable iron content, are now being processed through beneficiation and scientific mineral processing. This approach converts underutilized resources into valuable raw material, recovering more iron ore from existing mines while reducing waste generation. The initiative supports sustainable mining practices, improves mineral conservation, reduces environmental footprint, and contributes to meeting the growing raw material requirements of India's steel sector.
Digital Transformation and Operational Efficiency
The management reviewed the newly implemented automated gate management system at the Kumaraswamy Mine, which has strengthened transparency and efficiency in iron ore dispatches. The digital system enables real-time monitoring and verification of material movement, ensuring mineral resources are transported securely to intended destinations while reducing manual intervention and improving operational oversight.
Employee Welfare and Infrastructure Development
Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD of NMDC, along with Functional Directors, inaugurated recently developed infrastructure facilities including High-Rise Towers, reflecting the company's commitment to employee well-being and community development. The CMD emphasized that sustainable growth extends beyond production targets and includes creating better living standards for employees, supporting local communities, and maintaining strong environmental stewardship. Mukherjee stated that NMDC aims to build mining operations that future generations can look upon with pride and make Donimalai Complex a model mining complex reflecting the highest standards of responsible mining, innovation, and employee welfare.
