Operational Performance and Project Update

The Department of Atomic Energy provided a detailed update on Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited's (NPCIL) operational performance and expansion projects in response to a parliamentary question. The response covers electricity generation data from nuclear power plants and their Plant Load Factor (PLF) over the last five years, though the specific annexure with numerical data was not included in this excerpt.

Projects Under Construction

NPCIL currently has five major nuclear power projects under construction with a total capacity of 8,800 MW. The recently commissioned RAPP-7&8 at Rawatbhata, Rajasthan (2 x 700 MW) began commercial operation on April 15, 2026, with a project cost of ₹22,924 crore on a twin-unit basis.

The Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) Units 1&2 (2 x 700 MW) are expected to complete construction and commissioning in approximately six years from First Pour of Concrete, with a current estimated cost of ₹20,594 crore (under revision). Kaiga Units 5&6 in Karnataka (2 x 700 MW) are scheduled for commissioning in June 2031 and June 2032 respectively, with an estimated cost of ₹21,000 crore (under revision).

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project Units 3&4 (2 x 1000 MW) in Tamil Nadu are targeted for commissioning in June 2027 and June 2028 with a project cost of ₹68,893 crore, while Units 5&6 (2 x 1000 MW) are scheduled for June 2029 and March 2030 commissioning with a cost of ₹69,437 crore.

BHAVINI Fast Breeder Reactor

BHAVINI is commissioning the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, with an estimated completion cost of ₹8,181 crore. The project is expected to achieve full commissioning by March 2027.

Collaborations and Security Measures

During the last three years, NPCIL entered into agreements and collaborations for nuclear power generation augmentation with Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO), Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), and NLC India Limited (formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited).

The response also detailed comprehensive security measures at all nuclear power plants, including periodic audits, reviews, security upgrades, and emergency response plans approved by regulatory authorities. All plant personnel receive training in safety, emergency, and security measures, with periodic mock drills conducted on different emergency scenarios, the reports of which are reviewed by concerned officials.
