Panasonic Converts Osaka Battery Lines to Supercapacitors
Panasonic Holdings announced that it will convert the electric‑vehicle battery production lines at its Osaka Prefecture facility into a dedicated supercapacitor manufacturing line. The conversion will enable mass production of supercapacitors beginning in the fiscal year that ends in March 2027, and the devices are intended for use in capacitor backup units.
The Osaka plant previously manufactured batteries for Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles. Production capacity at this site declined after Tesla ceased manufacturing those models, prompting the repurposing decision.
In a related development disclosed on 23 June, Panasonic said it will expand supercapacitor production for external sales at its Chitose City, Hokkaido facility. Operations at the Chitose plant are expected to commence around February or March 2027.
Within Panasonic Holdings, the automotive battery operations are managed by the Panasonic Energy division, while capacitor production falls under the Panasonic Industry division; both operate as separate business units under the holding company.
