PayPal India Workforce Reduction
PayPal announced that on August 31 it reduced its India headcount by approximately 220 employees, representing about 4 % of its Indian workforce. A prior report citing roughly 600 employees was corrected to this lower figure.
The layoffs spanned technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance functions and impacted staff at the company’s offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Employees received a phone call on August 31, after which access to PayPal’s systems was immediately revoked. Those affected were offered job‑placement assistance and a one‑month salary severance package, although some employees reported they were still awaiting details on their final settlements.
These cuts form part of a broader restructuring initiative announced by PayPal’s management in May. The company aims to reduce its global workforce by 20 % over the next two to three years, targeting at least $1.5 billion in gross run‑rate savings during that period. At the end of 2025, PayPal employed roughly 23,800 people worldwide, implying the global reduction could affect around 4,760 positions.
India remains a strategic component of PayPal’s technology and payments infrastructure. The firm opened its first development centre in Chennai in 2008, while its Bengaluru and Hyderabad sites support machine learning, artificial intelligence, fraud prevention, risk management and data science activities.
In a statement, PayPal said, “The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi‑year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long‑term growth.”
The move aligns with a broader trend of global technology and fintech firms tightening cost structures and pursuing AI‑driven efficiencies.
