PayPal Announces Workforce Reduction in India

PayPal Holdings, Inc. has announced the termination of approximately 600 positions in its Indian operations, representing roughly ten percent of its local headcount of more than 6,000 employees. The layoffs span technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance functions and were executed at the company’s offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Employees were informed of the termination on August 31, when calls were placed to the affected staff, and immediate revocation of system access was reported.

The company has offered job‑placement assistance to those impacted and will provide a severance package equivalent to one month’s salary; however, some employees indicated they are still awaiting details regarding their final settlements.

These cuts are part of a broader restructuring initiative announced by PayPal’s management in May, which targets a 20 percent reduction of its global workforce over the next two to three years. The restructuring aims to achieve at least $1.5 billion in gross run‑rate savings. At the end of 2025, PayPal employed about 23,800 people worldwide, implying that the global plan could affect roughly 4,760 positions.

India remains a strategic component of PayPal’s technology and payments infrastructure. The firm opened its first development centre in Chennai in 2008, while its Bengaluru and Hyderabad sites focus on machine learning, artificial intelligence, fraud prevention, risk management and data science.

The move reflects a wider trend among global technology and fintech firms to tighten cost discipline and pursue AI‑driven efficiencies, with recent similar workforce reductions reported at other multinational technology and services companies operating in India.
