Investment Details
Billionaire investor Peter Thiel, through his investment vehicle Thiel Macro LLC, purchased approximately 1.2 million American depositary shares (ADS) of Vista Energy (NYSE:VIST) for a total consideration of about $76 million, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The transaction represents roughly 1 % of Vista Energy’s outstanding capital.
Vista Energy Overview
Vista Energy is one of the largest oil producers operating in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation. The company currently produces about 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day and has invested more than $6.5 billion in Argentina to develop its shale assets. In May, Vista increased its investment and production outlook for Vaca Muerta. The shale formation, located in Neuquén province in Patagonia, is roughly the size of Belgium and contains the world’s second‑largest shale‑gas reserves and the fourth‑largest shale‑oil reserves, making it central to Argentina’s plans to expand energy production and exports.
Context and Related Activities
The stake purchase follows a meeting four months earlier between Peter Thiel and Argentine President Javier Milei at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires. President Milei later told local media that the discussion covered economic policy and a shared opposition to wealth taxes. Local reports also noted that Thiel recently bought a mansion in an affluent Buenos Aires neighbourhood.
Additional Holdings and Strategic Focus
Thiel Macro reported a total portfolio value of $418.7 million. Besides the Vista stake, the portfolio includes holdings in Vistra (NYSE:VST), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), American Electric Power (NASDAQ:AEP), DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE), FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE), CMS Energy (NYSE:CMS) and nuclear‑reactor developer X‑energy. This composition highlights a broader focus on energy generation and electricity demand.
Political and Economic Implications
President Milei has expressed interest in leveraging Patagonia’s open land and cold climate to attract data‑center projects, which could generate new power demand. However, similar projects elsewhere in Latin America have faced opposition over water and energy requirements. Thiel’s role as chairman and co‑founder of data‑analytics firm Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:PLTR) was also noted, linking his technology background to the broader energy and data‑center narrative.
