Overview
Pi Green Innovations Pvt. Ltd., a Pune‑based clean‑tech firm, in partnership with GMR Energy and anchored by GMR Innovex, has commissioned its Net Zero Machine (NZM) pilot project at the GMR Warora Energy Limited (GWEL) plant in Warora, Maharashtra.
Technology and Capacity
The NZM pilot is the first operational carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) solution in India built on mineral carbonation. It has an installed capacity ranging from 2 to 10 tonnes of CO₂ per day. The system captures CO₂ directly from Scope‑1 industrial sources and mineralises it using industrial waste streams such as fly ash, converting the gas into a solid, non‑hazardous slurry that can be sold for sustainable construction.
Revenue Streams and Environmental Features
The plant generates two distinct revenue streams: (i) the resale of the solid waste material derived from mineralisation, and (ii) carbon credits earned in the voluntary market. To ensure full environmental compliance, the installation incorporates closed‑loop water recycling and a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) process.
Commercial and Regulatory Outlook
The technology is wholly indigenous, patented in India, with patent applications pending in more than 30 countries. It is designed for modular scalability up to 1,000 TPD and targets hard‑to‑abate sectors such as steel, cement and chlor‑alkali under India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). Government data indicate that the CCTS covered 490 obligated entities as of the January 2026 notification, and a June 2026 draft notification is set to add 255 iron‑and‑steel units, pushing the total to over 700 entities. Pi Green has submitted the NZM mineral‑carbonation methodology to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for registration under the CCTS.
Statement
“This deployment at GMR Warora Energy Limited demonstrates that industrial decarbonisation is possible today in live, operational facilities,” said Irfan Pathan, Co‑founder and CEO of Pi Green Innovations. “By capturing CO₂ at the source and converting it into stable, useful industrial materials with commercial resale value, we are paving a scalable path toward a cleaner, pollution‑free India where industry and sustainability coexist.”
Future Plans
The pilot serves as a foundational step toward scaling mineral‑carbonation systems across heavy industry, with the ultimate goal of achieving commercial‑scale industrial carbon capture nationwide.
