Overview

Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS), a global contract development and manufacturing organization and subsidiary of Piramal Pharma Ltd (PPL), announced the launch of a new microbiology laboratory at its sterile injectable facility in Lexington, Kentucky. The laboratory was released for routine GMP use on September 11 2026, and its sterility testing suite received conditional approval shortly thereafter, making it one of the first major components of the ongoing $85 million Lexington expansion to become operational.

Expansion Details

The new laboratory more than triples the site’s existing microbiology testing space and incorporates three new biosafety cabinets, enabling concurrent testing and reducing sample queue times. All incubators have been consolidated within the new lab, streamlining workflow and improving monitoring and accessibility. A dedicated sterility testing suite with a Grade C background environment houses a fully integrated Grade A sterility testing isolator, which doubles the site’s sterility testing capacity and allows multiple samples to be processed simultaneously. The isolator supports both open and closed filtration methods, providing flexibility for a broader range of product testing requirements. Built‑in pass‑throughs permit direct sample movement from the manufacturing floor to the lab, minimizing contamination risk and protecting product integrity.

Operational Impact

PPS estimates that the enhanced laboratory and isolator will reduce testing times by up to 50%, thereby accelerating batch releases, minimizing bottlenecks, and smoothing transitions as programs progress from clinical to commercial stages. The added capacity also lowers supply risk and prepares the Lexington site for commercial‑scale demand.

Timeline and Future Outlook

While the microbiology laboratory is now operational, the remainder of the Lexington expansion—including commercial‑scale fill/finish capabilities—is expected to be fully online in late 2027.
