The Ministry of Railways has prioritized manufacturing of 238 Air-Conditioned EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) rakes through its Production Units to support the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). The production will be allocated among three facilities: Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai will manufacture 120 rakes, Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala will produce 71 rakes, and Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Raebareli will manufacture 47 rakes.
The Railway Board has approved procurement of these AC EMU rakes based on existing and proven RDSO/ICF specifications, which will facilitate expeditious manufacturing and supply of the rolling stock. The supply is planned to commence from 2027, with the entire sanctioned quantity of 238 rakes scheduled for completion by 2030.
This initiative is designed to ensure timely availability of rolling stock in line with the commissioning of infrastructure under MUTP. The availability of the first trainsets during 2027, followed by completion of the entire requirement by 2030, will help bridge the gap between infrastructure commissioning and rolling stock induction, enabling optimum utilization of the newly built infrastructure. Indian Railways' Production Units have demonstrated capability in manufacturing modern passenger rolling stock, including Air-Conditioned EMUs, Vande Bharat trainsets, and Vande Metro trainsets.
