Dettol Banega Swasth India Marks Global Handwashing Day 2026
Reckitt’s flagship health‑hygiene initiative, Dettol Banega Swasth India (DBSI), commemorated Global Handwashing Day 2026 by reporting that the programme now reaches more than 30 million children in roughly 1 million schools across India and underpins over 43 billion handwashing occasions each year.
Impact Evaluation Findings (2016‑2026)
An independent third‑party evaluation covering the decade from 2016 to 2026 found that school absenteeism linked to poor hygiene fell from 36 % to 19.7 %, a 45.2 % reduction. Correct handwashing behaviour among students rose sharply, moving from 36 % in 2017 to 95.4 % in 2026. The study also recorded that 95.1 % of participating children now understand the connection between handwashing and disease prevention. Behavioural metrics show children in the programme are 5.2 times more likely to wash their hands at critical moments and 4.3 times more likely to practice handwashing at home, extending benefits to families and communities.
Learning Innovations and Outcomes
The programme’s Hygiene Building as a Learning Aid (H‑BaLA) model converts school infrastructure into interactive hygiene classrooms, embedding cues in walls, corridors, classrooms and handwashing stations. Recent enhancements include practice‑based learning, peer‑to‑peer teaching, technology‑enabled content, gamification, AI‑powered tools, music and STEM‑based interventions. These innovations lifted knowledge‑retention scores from 50 % to 90 %.
Digital hygiene resources have seen rapid adoption, with usage climbing from 5 % of students in 2016 to nearly 80 % today. Inclusive learning resources have broadened access for children with diverse learning needs.
New Engagement Tool
Earlier this year, the Dettol Hygiene Loyalty Card was launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Targeted at children aged 6‑14, the card employs gamified challenges, rewards and child‑safe digital engagement to reinforce consistent hygiene practices.
Partnerships and Longevity
Over the past 13 years, DBSI has collaborated with government bodies, educators, development partners and community organisations to advance preventive health through behaviour change. The programme continues to scale through digital innovation, experiential learning and expanded community partnerships.
Executive Comment
Gaurav Jain, Executive Vice President, South Asia, Reckitt, stated that the initiative’s reach of over 43 billion handwashing occasions annually and the 45.2 % drop in school absenteeism validate Reckitt’s commitment to delivering better health in more hands every day, emphasizing that the impact begins with a simple sink, a drop of water and a bar of soap.
