Overview

On 13 October 2026, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), an Institution of National Importance under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) at RGIPT’s Jais campus in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Harish Hirani, Director of RGIPT, and Ms. Sneh Lata, Scientist‑G and Deputy Director General (Central) of BIS, in the presence of RGIPT deans, heads of departments and assistant deans. The BIS delegation also included Shri Piyush Mahadeorao Wasekar (Scientist‑E/Director, Lucknow Branch Office), Shri Ritwik Anand (Scientist‑E and Director) and Shri Jaisankar Mishra (Consultant, Standardization Activity).

Scope of Collaboration

The agreement creates a framework for cooperation in:

  • Standardization, research and development, and conformity assessment;
  • Technical capacity building and academic engagement;
  • Joint organization of seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, lectures and training programmes;
  • Exchange of technical publications, research information and educational resources.

A key focus is integrating standardization and conformity‑assessment concepts into RGIPT’s academic programmes. BIS will contribute inputs for teaching‑module development to help students and researchers understand the role of standards in product quality, safety, reliability, testing and technological development.

The parties will also explore establishing a Centre of Excellence in Standardization, Testing and Conformity Assessment at RGIPT, using RGIPT laboratory facilities for BIS conformity‑assessment requirements, developing IT‑based solutions to support BIS activities, and arranging faculty consultancy on a secondment basis. Infrastructure support for specific R&D projects may be provided under mutually agreed terms for each project.

Public Showcase

The MoU was electronically showcased on 14 October 2026 during the national‑level World Standards Day celebration organized by BIS at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. The event, themed “SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy”, was attended by senior BIS officials and Government of India dignitaries, including Shri B. L. Verma and Smt. Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

Expected Outcomes

The collaboration is expected to generate interdisciplinary research opportunities, strengthen institutional engagement with India’s national quality infrastructure, and raise awareness of standardization among students, faculty and researchers at RGIPT. Specific activities and projects will be pursued through mutually agreed arrangements under the MoU.
