Overview

The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), an Institution of National Importance created by an Act of Parliament, has announced a new academic pathway that links its three‑year Diploma Engineering programme with its B.Tech degree, allowing students from across India to progress without appearing for the JEE (Advanced) examination.

Admission Details

Each year RGIPT admits 480 students into the Diploma Engineering programmes at its Sivasagar Campus in Assam. Of these, 240 seats are reserved for candidates from Assam and the remaining 240 are open to students from the rest of the country. To address under‑utilisation of seats by non‑Assam candidates, the Institute now conducts a third‑round admission based on Class 10 (HSLC) performance, requiring Mathematics and Science as compulsory subjects.

Eligibility Criteria

Prospective diploma entrants must secure at least 60 % marks in Class 10 (55 % for SC/ST/PwD candidates) and meet the minimum prescribed marks in Mathematics and Science. Admission to the vacant seats in the third round follows these criteria.

Academic Pathway

Students who enroll in the diploma programme can join immediately after Class 10 and obtain a diploma degree after three years. Those achieving a Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 7.5 or higher become eligible for direct lateral entry into the second year of RGIPT’s B.Tech programme, thereby bypassing the highly competitive JEE (Advanced) exam that normally governs B.Tech admissions.

Campus Experience

After completing the diploma at Sivasagar, eligible B.Tech students spend their second and third years at the Jais Campus in Uttar Pradesh and their final year at the Bengaluru Campus in Karnataka. This multi‑campus structure exposes students to three culturally and geographically distinct regions of India, which RGIPT officials say enhances adaptability, leadership qualities, and a broader perspective.
