Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) reported strong operational and financial performance for August 2026 and the April-August 2026 period. The company achieved its best-ever August production output across all major categories, with crude steel production growing by 8% year-on-year to 1.68 million tonnes compared to 1.55 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. Hot metal production increased by 9% to 1.78 million tonnes from 1.63 million tonnes, while saleable steel production registered a 1% increase to 1.69 million tonnes from 1.66 million tonnes.

Sales performance showed even stronger growth, with total sales volumes reaching 1.871 million tonnes in August 2026, representing a 13% year-on-year increase over the 1.654 million tonnes recorded in the same period last year. The company achieved double-digit growth across Tier 1 and Tier 2 retail channels and recorded its highest-ever August sales in several value-added product categories including cold rolled, galvanized, and alloy steels. Cash collections grew substantially by 23% year-on-year, reflecting improved commercial practices.

SAIL demonstrated particular strength in its rail supplies segment, with supplies to Indian Railways growing by 5% year-on-year to 1.23 lakh tonnes from 1.18 lakh tonnes. In the Long Rails category, the company achieved its highest-ever supplies by delivering 1.12 lakh tonnes, representing an 11% year-on-year growth. The month also saw a meaningful reduction in inventory levels, indicating efficient supply chain coordination and faster market servicing.

Financially, SAIL strengthened its position by reducing borrowings by ₹870 crore from the level recorded on March 31, 2026. The positive momentum extended through the April-August 2026 period, with cumulative sales reaching 7.71 million tonnes, scoring a growth of 5.6% over the corresponding period last year despite global volatility. The company maintained healthy movement in finished and processed steel segments, supported by an improved product mix, stronger regional outreach, and firm domestic demand.

He noted that record production levels, strong sales momentum, and disciplined financial management together underscore the company's strengthening fundamentals, with expansion projects progress and positive demand outlook positioning SAIL well for accelerated growth.
