Samsung Electronics Co. announced that its first semiconductor fabrication plant within the Yongin chip cluster will begin operations in 2029, moving the start‑up date forward by one to two years from the original schedule. The acceleration aligns with the South Korean government’s decision to expedite development of the Yongin National Industrial Complex, a strategic national project intended to serve as Samsung’s next‑generation semiconductor manufacturing hub. The Yongin facility will be the inaugural unit of six semiconductor plants slated for construction at the complex, which is situated just south of Seoul. In a related investment plan disclosed last month, Samsung committed to invest 2,030 trillion won (approximately US$1.35 trillion) across its Pyeongtaek and Yongin semiconductor clusters, and additionally earmarked 400 trillion won for the construction of two new chip plants in Gwangju, located about 270 kilometres south of Seoul. These investments underscore Samsung’s expansive capital‑intensive expansion strategy in advanced semiconductor manufacturing within South Korea.
