Samsung Accelerates Yongin Semiconductor Plant Launch
Samsung Electronics Co. announced that its first semiconductor fabrication plant within the Yongin chip cluster will begin operations in 2029. This start date represents an acceleration of one to two years compared with the original schedule.
The advancement follows a recent government decision to speed up development of the Yongin National Industrial Complex, a national strategic project intended to serve as Samsung’s next‑generation semiconductor manufacturing hub. The Yongin facility will be the first of six semiconductor plants slated for construction at the complex, which is situated just south of Seoul.
In a related investment announcement made last month, Samsung disclosed a total commitment of 2,030 trillion won (approximately US$1.35 trillion) for its Pyeongtaek and Yongin semiconductor clusters. Additionally, the company said it will allocate 400 trillion won to build two new chip plants in Gwangju, located about 270 kilometres south of Seoul.
Implications
The earlier operational date underscores both Samsung’s confidence in the accelerated industrial policy environment and the strategic importance of expanding its semiconductor capacity in South Korea.
