Press Release – 18 June 2026, Mohali, India
Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED) announced that it has received approval for ₹150 crore of financial assistance under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) PM JI‑VAN Yojana through the Centre for High Technology (CHT). The funding will be used to establish a 91 kilolitres per day (KLPD) second‑generation (2G) ethanol biorefinery at Wave Sugar, Dhanaura, Uttar Pradesh.
The biorefinery will integrate LanzaTech’s globally recognised gas‑fermentation platform with Ankur Scientific Energy Technologies’ indigenous oxygen‑enriched biomass gasification technology in a thermally integrated configuration. This combination will convert biomass‑derived syngas into sustainable ethanol and create pathways for the production of green chemicals, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) intermediates, and other renewable molecules.
Key statements:
- Mr. Vivek Verma, Managing Director of SED, said the project marks a major step toward SED’s “Smart Village” vision, where agricultural residues become a valuable resource for clean fuels, green chemicals, and sustainable economic growth. He emphasized that the government’s support under PM JI‑VAN reinforces advanced biofuels’ role in strengthening India’s energy security and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives and the Global Biofuel Alliance.
- Mr. Sukhraj Soni, Director – Biofuels & Green Chemicals, SED, described the 91 KLPD 2G ethanol biorefinery as a significant advancement, noting that the integration of thermochemical gasification with biological gas fermentation provides a flexible platform for today’s advanced ethanol and future renewable fuels and green chemical products.
The announcement positions the project as a blueprint for future bio‑refineries capable of converting agricultural residues into multiple high‑value products, thereby supporting long‑term energy security and sustainable industrial growth. SED, with more than three decades of engineering experience in the sugar and process industries, is transitioning from a traditional process‑engineering firm to a technology‑driven partner in India’s clean‑energy transition.
