Siemens Limited delivers turnkey rail technologies for Pune Metro Line 3

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India – Business Wire India reports that Siemens Limited has supplied an integrated suite of turnkey rail solutions for the 23‑kilometre elevated Pune Metro Line 3 corridor, which began commercial passenger operations after being inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The technology package comprises 750 V DC third‑rail electrification, Communications‑Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling, integrated communications systems, comprehensive project management services and depot equipment. Siemens also committed to a ten‑year maintenance contract covering the electrification and signalling systems to ensure long‑term reliability and performance.

The project was executed under the Government of India’s New Metro Rail Policy through a public‑private partnership (PPP) model. The special‑purpose company Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, formed as a joint venture between TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (a Tata Group company) and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services), acted as the implementing entity. Siemens Limited participated as part of a consortium that included Siemens AG and other partners.

The 23‑km corridor links Hinjewadi, a major IT and business hub, with Shivajinagar, providing a faster, more efficient and sustainable transport option across one of Pune’s busiest mobility corridors. Once fully operational, the line is expected to reduce travel time between the two termini by approximately 50 %.

Rajeev Joisar, Head of Mobility Business at Siemens Limited, stated that the commencement of commercial operations represents a landmark achievement in India’s urban mobility journey and highlights the potential of PPPs to accelerate future metro expansions across the country.
