Snap Launches $2,195 Specs Augmented‑Reality Glasses
Snap announced on Wednesday the commercial launch of its Specs augmented‑reality glasses, priced at $2,195 per unit. The glasses operate as a standalone wearable computer, requiring no phone or external device, and incorporate see‑through displays in both lenses. They support a range of applications including navigation, gaming, entertainment, shopping, and real‑time translation, and can be controlled via gestures and voice commands.
The product is paired with Specs Intelligence, an AI assistant that runs across the glasses, iPhone and Mac. Specs Intelligence can access connected services and user schedule information to anticipate needs such as preparing for meetings, planning travel, and surfacing reminders.
Snap opened pre‑orders for Specs in June, collecting a refundable deposit at the $2,195 price point. The company expects shipments to begin this fall in the United States, the United Kingdom and France.
Compared with Meta’s Ray‑Ban smart glasses, which focus on camera and audio functions, Specs uses see‑through displays to overlay digital content directly within the user’s field of view, positioning it as a more immersive AI‑enabled eyewear option.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel described the $2,195 price as a “high consideration purchase” and emphasized that consumers will need to try the glasses to appreciate their capabilities. He also highlighted privacy safeguards: the glasses do not employ facial recognition and feature a visible indicator whenever recording is active.
The launch follows more than a decade of Snap’s development of AR hardware and occurs as other major technology firms, including Meta and Apple, accelerate their own AI‑powered eyewear projects.
