Overview
Sony India Private Limited announced the launch of OCELLUS (model ASR‑CT1), its first advanced camera‑tracking system designed to simplify and enhance augmented‑reality (AR) and virtual‑production workflows for broadcast, cinema, sport, news and weather applications. The system provides marker‑free tracking through multiple sensors and is compatible with Sony Cinema Line cameras, other system cameras and non‑Sony cameras, transmitting camera position and orientation data in real time while shooting.
Technical Architecture and Features
The OCELLUS solution consists of a compact sensor unit, a processing box and three lens encoders. The sensor unit houses five image sensors and incorporates Sony’s Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology to create a reference map that enables stable marker‑free tracking both indoors and outdoors. Four of the five sensors operate simultaneously to deliver robust tracking with strong resistance to occlusion, and tracking continues as long as at least one sensor detects valid feature points. Infra‑red LEDs positioned on both sides of each sensor improve low‑light performance, while a Visible Light Cut Unit maintains tracking stability under changing lighting conditions. The sensor unit measures approximately 86 mm × 60 mm × 43 mm and weighs about 250 g, and it mounts via NATO‑rail parts for flexible positioning. Power and data are conveyed to the processing box through a single USB‑Type‑C cable with a secure locking mechanism.
The processing box offers real‑time transmission of tracking data and camera/lens metadata to computer‑generated (CG) rendering software such as Unreal Engine via an Ethernet connection, using the free‑d format for seamless integration. It includes multiple connectivity options: Genlock input, timecode input, SDI input/output terminals, and dedicated ports for lens encoder connections. Tracking data, along with camera and lens metadata, can be recorded as FBX files on SDXC memory cards (UHS‑II/UHS‑I) synchronized with the main camera’s video files, facilitating streamlined post‑production. An OLED display on the box provides quick monitoring of IP address, tracking status, lens data and other key information.
Lens encoders detect rotation and capture lens parameters—including focus, zoom and iris—allowing precise data capture during shooting. They transmit metadata to the processing box via a LEMO 7‑pin cable and enable metadata acquisition for lenses and cameras that do not support in‑camera metadata embedding via SDI output. The encoders are supplied with five different gear types to accommodate a wide range of lenses.
Pricing, Availability and Distribution
The OCELLUS ‘ASR‑CT1’ is priced at INR 32,37,990 (MRP) and became available for purchase in India on 5 May 2026. It can be bought through all Sony Center stores, Alpha Flagship stores and major electronic retail outlets across the country.
