Product Introduction
Sony India Private Limited unveiled OCELLUS (model ASR‑CT1), its first advanced, marker‑free camera tracking system designed to simplify and enhance augmented reality (AR) and virtual‑production workflows for broadcast, cinema, sport, news and weather applications. The system is positioned as a camera‑agnostic solution that can be integrated with Sony Cinema Line cameras, other Sony system cameras, and non‑Sony cameras.
Core Functionalities and Data Flow
OCELLUS employs five image sensors together with Sony’s Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology to create a reference map that enables stable, marker‑free tracking both indoors and outdoors. The sensor unit, measuring approximately 86 mm × 60 mm × 43 mm and weighing about 250 g, incorporates infrared LEDs on each sensor for low‑light performance and a Visible Light Cut Unit to maintain tracking consistency under changing illumination. The unit connects to a processing box via a single USB‑Type‑C cable that carries power and data through a secure locking mechanism.
When paired with Sony cameras, focus, iris and zoom metadata are extracted from the camera’s SDI output and transmitted in real time to external devices over an Ethernet connection. For lenses that do not support in‑camera metadata capture, dedicated lens encoders can be attached; these encoders detect rotation and relay focus, zoom and iris parameters to the processing box through a LEMO 7‑pin cable. The processing box offers multiple connectivity options, including Genlock input, Timecode input, SDI input/output, and dedicated ports for lens encoder connections. It streams real‑time tracking data and camera/lens metadata to CG rendering software such as Unreal Engine using the free‑d format, and it records the data as FBX files on SDXC memory cards (UHS‑II/UHS‑I), synchronised with the main camera’s video files. An OLED display on the box provides quick monitoring of IP address, tracking status, lens data and other key information.
Performance Highlights
The system delivers stable tracking even when only one of the five sensors detects valid feature points, providing strong resistance to occlusion and ensuring continuity in limited‑visibility scenarios. IR LEDs enhance low‑light accuracy, while the Visible Light Cut Unit mitigates lighting fluctuations. NATO‑rail mounting hardware enables flexible installation, and the compact design facilitates integration into diverse production setups.
