SpaceX and Charter Communications Explore U.S. Consumer Mobile Partnership

SpaceX and Charter Communications have conducted executive‑level discussions about forming a consumer mobile phone offering in the United States, according to Bloomberg sources familiar with the matter. The contemplated arrangement would enable Charter to route a portion of SpaceX’s mobile traffic through Charter’s ground‑based internet infrastructure, mirroring the model used for Charter’s existing Spectrum Mobile wireless service.

The partnership is intended to advance SpaceX’s ambition to become a direct‑to‑consumer mobile service provider. SpaceX, which recently completed its initial public offering, currently derives the majority of its profit from its Starlink satellite internet business. At present, Starlink Mobile is offered as a $10‑per‑month add‑on through T‑Mobile US, providing text messaging and internet‑based calls in remote locations.

Charter declined to comment on the talks, and SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The report follows a Financial Times story that indicated SpaceX plans to launch mobile services directly to consumers, a move that would require additional mobile spectrum and ground‑based infrastructure to complement its satellite spectrum holdings.

SpaceX has recently secured AWS‑3 mobile spectrum rights in a Federal Communications Commission auction and previously purchased additional spectrum assets from EchoStar in the prior year. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell told CNBC that Starlink Mobile could eventually attract more users than the company’s home broadband service, stating, “Starlink Mobile will far exceed Starlink broadband in the home. Not everybody is going to need Starlink broadband in their homes. There’s lots of other options as well.”

For Charter, the potential collaboration could bolster its wireless business following its 2025 agreement to merge with Cox Communications, an acquisition that expanded Charter’s subscriber base by more than 20%. Currently, Spectrum Mobile delivers wireless service through infrastructure agreements with T‑Mobile and Verizon Communications, while routing a significant share of customer traffic over Charter’s Wi‑Fi network.
