SpaceX Pipeline Initiative

SpaceX announced that it will commence construction of an eight‑mile natural‑gas pipeline, branded Starpipe, in the coming month to supply its Texas launch complex known as Starbase. The project is being undertaken by SpaceX’s affiliate Lone Star Mineral Development and a filing with the Texas Railroad Commission indicates that the pipeline is slated to become operational by January 26, 2027.

The pipeline will originate on an 83‑acre parcel at the Port of Brownsville, for which SpaceX is negotiating a 50‑year lease with the city. Engineering documents submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reveal plans for a liquefaction facility at Starbase that will convert the piped natural gas into liquid methane, the propellant used by the Starship launch vehicle.

Each Starship launch consumes roughly 630,000 gallons of methane. Currently, this fuel is delivered via hundreds of tanker trucks, a process that takes several hours. The new pipeline will replace those trucks and is intended to support a future launch cadence that could rise from dozens to hundreds, and eventually thousands of launches per year.

SpaceX has already signed over 100 oil and gas leases with Texas landowners since 2023, underscoring its strategy to secure its own propellant supply chain. President Gwynne Shotwell reiterated on June 12 that the company plans to build pipelines, process its own propellant, and is also exploring the possibility of drilling its own natural gas.

Starship is a cornerstone of SpaceX’s broader ambitions, including the expansion of the Starlink broadband network, deployment of orbital AI data‑center satellites, and the goal of transporting astronauts to the Moon and Mars.
