SRMS Institute of Medical Sciences Introduces Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Uttar Pradesh

Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS IMS) in Bareilly has inaugurated a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) facility, described as the first‑of‑its‑kind in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The HBOT unit comprises a multi‑place hyperbaric chamber capable of accommodating five to six patients at a time under supervised clinical care, allowing multiple eligible patients to receive treatment concurrently.

The facility is financed through the SRMS Trust’s annual medical research grant of ₹7 crore, an initiative aimed at supporting life‑saving therapies, research into rare diseases, preventive healthcare and the adoption of advanced medical technology for better patient outcomes.

Air Marshal (Retd) Dr MS Butola, Principal of SRMS IMS, explained that unlike conventional oxygen supplementation, HBOT places patients inside a specially designed chamber where they breathe 100 % pure oxygen under higher‑than‑normal atmospheric pressure. The increased pressure enables the lungs to absorb significantly more oxygen, facilitating greater oxygen delivery to injured or diseased tissues and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Dr Butola highlighted the chamber’s multi‑place feature, noting that it can treat five to six patients simultaneously, reducing the need for patients and families to travel to distant centers for specialized hyperbaric care. He cautioned that HBOT is a specialized medical treatment and its suitability depends on each patient’s condition and clinical assessment.

Therapeutic Applications

HBOT is indicated for a broad spectrum of conditions, including:

  • Anaerobic infections
  • Chronic and non‑healing wounds, including diabetic foot wounds
  • Serious tissue injuries, burns, trauma, and gangrene
  • Carbon‑monoxide poisoning
  • Radiation‑related tissue damage
  • Various cancers and compromised grafts
  • Severe infections across specialties such as Neurology, Neurosurgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Trauma Care
  • High‑altitude and aviation‑related pressure‑change conditions, e.g., decompression sickness

The institute has also recently installed an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) facility, further strengthening its ability to support patients requiring advanced life‑support interventions. Over the past two decades, SRMS IMS has expanded its service portfolio to include comprehensive cancer care, kidney and bone‑marrow transplants, robotic surgeries (including robotic knee replacement), laser surgeries, interventional radiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology studies (EPS) and other specialized medical services.

These additions aim to bring advanced treatment options—traditionally available only at select metropolitan centers—to patients across the region, thereby widening access to specialized care.
