Overview

On August 28, 2026, STARCARES – the community impact arm of global multi‑asset broker STARTRADER – announced the completion of a full renovation of the basketball court at Communal Elementary School in the Barangay Communal area of Buhangin, Davao City, Philippines. The newly opened facility is now in daily use and is designed to serve as a dedicated space for learning, sport, and community life.

Beneficiaries

The upgraded court is expected to benefit approximately 20,000 individuals: around 2,000 school learners, 72 school staff members, 1,600 parents, and an estimated 16,000 local residents of Barangay Communal. For students, the court provides a safe venue for regular physical education, as well as a reliable location for graduations, award ceremonies, and school assemblies. For the broader community, it will host meetings, celebrations, and youth‑focused activities after school hours, reinforcing basketball’s central role in daily life.

Statements

Nelson Sepe Lubguban Jr., Principal of Communal Elementary School, remarked that prior to the upgrade graduations and community events were held on a cracked, uneven surface, and that the new court now offers a safe and proper space for both education and celebration. Peter Karsten, Chief Executive Officer of STARTRADER, emphasized that a court becomes powerful when it gives young people a place to show up, be seen, and grow stronger together, describing the impact the initiative aims to create.

Broader Initiative

The Davao project extends STARCARES’ ongoing work revitalising community infrastructure, following similar projects previously completed in Vietnam, Thailand, and Nigeria. Under the programme “Where Tomorrow’s STARS Begin,” STARCARES will continue to identify communities where practical infrastructure can generate lasting everyday value.
