Emissions Reduction

Steelcase reported that between 2019 and 2025 it cut its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse‑gas emissions by 33%, decreasing from 121,694 metric tonnes of CO₂e to 81,943 metric tonnes. This achievement places the company roughly two‑thirds of the way toward its 2030 target of halving operational emissions, a target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In the same period, Scope 3 emissions – covering fuel‑ and energy‑related activities, operational waste and business travel – fell by 22% in 2025. By year‑end, suppliers accounting for nearly two‑thirds of supplier‑based emissions had either set SBTi‑validated carbon‑reduction targets or committed to doing so.

Product and Circularity Initiatives

Steelcase offers certified CarbonNeutral® products in the Americas and Asia‑Pacific and certified Climate Impact Partners® products in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Customers purchased almost 50,000 certified CarbonNeutral® products in 2025. Through the "Circular by Steelcase" program, 99% of decommissioned furniture and equipment were kept out of landfills, with more than 600 tonnes of material reused or recycled.

Community Engagement and Volunteerism

The Better Futures Community activated 324 partnerships in 38 of Steelcase’s 72 locations, collaborating with 200 community partners to generate local impact. The third annual "Better Is Possible" Design Challenge convened 219 members, dealers, customers and community partners for a one‑day global workshop focused on building trust across differences. Steelcase members logged 20,680 volunteer hours in 2025, bringing the cumulative total since 2020 to 96,641 hours, positioning the organization to achieve its 100,000‑hour goal nearly three years early. Fourteen employee‑led Business Inclusion Groups co‑designed more than 200 cultural learning experiences that reached over 2,000 participants worldwide.

Corporate Context and Outlook

The report notes that Steelcase is now part of HNI Corporation, with both companies sharing a focus on wellbeing for people and the planet. Jeffrey Lorenger, chairman, president and chief executive officer of HNI Corporation, emphasized the collaborative learning and progress between the entities. Megan Blazina, senior vice‑president, international, digital and strategy at Steelcase and head of sustainability and social impact, highlighted that the commitments to people and the planet are translating into measurable actions. Steelcase’s long‑term net‑zero ambition targets a reduction of more than 90% of its 2019 baseline emissions by 2050, with the remaining emissions to be neutralized through permanent carbon removal and storage.
