Announcement
Stellantis notified the Canadian autoworkers’ union Unifor that it is considering the sale of its Brampton, Ontario manufacturing facility.
Plant status
The Brampton plant was closed for retooling in 2024 and had been scheduled to resume operations in 2025 to produce the Jeep Compass. Stellantis halted the retooling and transferred the planned production to an Illinois facility after tariffs on Canadian goods were imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Labor negotiations
Unifor will commence contract negotiations with Stellantis covering the Brampton plant, the Windsor Assembly Plant and the Etobicoke Casting Plant. The existing collective‑bargaining agreement expires on 20 September.
Potential EV partnership
Reports indicate Stellantis has been discussing the production of electric vehicles in Canada with its Chinese partner Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology. Unifor expressed serious concerns about Stellantis partnering with a Chinese company to manufacture electric vehicles at the closed Brampton plant.
